disappointing sunshine
“You assumed things would change…”
It had been a long night. Travel for work still had its pleasurable moments, but lately it took a toll that he didn't recall from years before. It was definitely more challenging than it used to be. There were more stopovers and delays along the way, and people were generally more anxious than ever. He had thought that once the pandemic ended people would unwind and enjoy being together again, but instead, fear had made most people paranoid and tribal. For the moments of jollity, there was plenty that was terrible.
He sighed. What he needed now that he was home was a drink. Something warm for his tired body and bright for his discouraged mind.
He tapped his nose, a habit he had developed as an apprentice learning his craft. Finally, the perfect idea dawned on him.
"Yes," he thought, "that would be just the thing to make me forget the terrible trip." Pulling a tumbler from the shelf he walked out to the edge of his front yard and filled it to the brim. Lifting it to his lips, he inhaled the sweet dewy scent and sipped with anticipation.
And then he spewed it out of his mouth. Even the sunshine tasted terrible this year.
