King of Spades
"The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain." Dolly Parton
Erica Drayton's 100-word story challenge this month is based on Tarot cards. Not wanting to dive into those themes, I decided to pull my prompts from a regular deck of playing cards, drawn randomly, and a random quote.
It was the oddest thing. A spade, planted in the earth like a sapling, stood in the center of the yard. Had it been in a garden, logic might have suggested it was left there by someone planning to resume work. But this wasn't a garden. Clover spread, low to the ground like green velvet.
The spade remained, year after year. Daring children tried to pull it out of the earth and see what was buried beneath, but found it firmly embedded. Winter and summer, through both rain and rainbows, the spade stood tall, a silent sentry guarding a secret.
Another good one! 💚
Really great and succinct.
