A character who is crazy
Gerald was crazy and everyone knew it. Still, they always gathered around the tiny stage in the town square gazebo when he stood to speak. Tall and elegant, Gerald possessed the stamped imprint of days gone by, when ladies and gentlemen dressed for their forays into town. Gerald's Homburg hat crowned his head, and the polish of his black patent leather oxfords reflected the sun. Everything in between was perfectly pressed to sharp creases. Most days, Gerald carried a walking stick, but last Saturday he stepped up to the stage with a metal sphere in his hands.
The crowd murmured when Gerald turned and looked at them. "Here it comes," said one balding man with a full beard. "This tale should be a good 'un."
Gerald eyed his audience carefully before holding up the sphere. "This, ladies and gentlemen, is an object recently acquired that promises to send me 20 years into the future. It is made of iron, nickel, and pyroxenes, a combination that only appears in meteorites that fall to the earth from the heavens above us."
The women stared curiously, while the men displayed the skepticism peculiar to this town.
"This particular globe came to me from a scientist in Lithuania, who found it in a field that had burned in an unexplained fire. You must note the charred etchings that indicate a fall through the atmosphere. I have endeavored to understand the language of these marks, and have determined that this particular orb traveled to our time from the distant past."
The crowd started to break up as people, bored by this story, began to leave. The women rolled their eyes, murmuring that this story lacked the depth of his previous tales. The men shook their heads as they relit their pipes and began to discuss the weather.
Then Gerald raised his voice, saying,
"Today you will witness a thing no other human has seen in this present day. I will use this gift from space to transport myself into the future. You will be my witnesses. Fare thee well, and may the deities grant you peace for your lives."
With that, Gerald covered the orb with both hands, nodded, and vanished, leaving behind a wisp of smoke rising from the singed platform where he had stood.
Another good one Stephanie! I enjoyed this spirited engagement and felt like I was right there in the audience watching this intriguing spectacle. I was so absORBed! 🤓🪩
So Gerald wasn't all that crazy after all. 😁
