“Seguiré adelante.”
The whisper caught Josefina off guard. She hadn’t heard her native language since arriving in this small forgotten town. But this was her mother tongue, spoken with the accent she remembered from childhood.
“Who is there?” she asked. “¿Quién está?”
No one answered and the voice vanished. Josefina tried to forget the whisper, but it repeated with predetermined randomness. When her life seemed too hard to move forward, she would glimpse a shimmer or shadow that whispered to her again, in the language of her youth.
When she was old, the voice whispered one last time, saying, “El viaje ha terminado.”
Josefina looked up. Before her was a shimmering being, holding out a hand. “¿Quién?”
The being nodded. “Creo que sabes quién soy.”
And she did. Josefina took the hand of her guardian angel and kept going, forward into eternity.
